Lactose is a milk sugar that is broken down by the enzyme lactase which is produced in the small intestine. Lactose intolerance is the reduced ability to digest (break down) lactose due to insufficient amounts of lactase enzyme. This causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, gassiness , abdominal pain and diarrhoea.
it is important to consult with the dietitian before excluding all dairy. Dairy is an important source of protein, calcium, Vitamin B12 & riboflavin. Most people with lactose intolerance can tolerate cheese and small amounts of milk & yoghurt. If your symptoms persist you may need to consider the other FODMAPs and it is best to consult the dietitian for guidance.
